Abstract: The study employed the qualitative research methodology of ethnomusicology. The objectives are 1) To investigate the development of Mudong Folk Song in Ba nan, Chongqing, China. 2) To analyze the music characteristic Mudong Folk Song in Ba nan, Chongqing, China. 3) To examine the role Mudong Folk Song in Ba nan, Chongqing, China. The data were mainly collected from fieldwork with the key informants and presented in the descriptive analysis format. The results are as follows: 1) According to the change of music form of Mudong folk song, its development is divided into four stages: origin stage, establishment stage, prosperity stage, disappearance and protection stage. 2) Through the analysis of the scale, meter, rhythm, melody and singing mode of Mudong folk songs, the music characteristics of Mudong folk songs are improvisational singing, with fast rhythm, changeable melody, wide singing content and diverse singing forms. 3) Mudong folk song is formed and developed in a specific social, historical and cultural ecological environment, which makes it have practical, educational, aesthetic and entertainment functions.
