Caidiao Opera in Guilin City, Guangxi Province, China

Abstract

The title of this dissertation is "Caidiao Opera in Guilin City, Guangxi Province, China". The objectives are: 1) to classify the vocal and instrumental repertoires in Caidiao opera; 2) to analyze the formal designs of Caidiao opera; 3) to explore the ways to conserve and improve Caidiao opera's popularity among the new generation. The study employed the qualitative research methodology including documentary studies and field studies in Guilin city, to collect the data concerning the current situation and the existence of the Caidiao opera.

The research shows that Caidiao opera is a local traditional opera in Guilin City, Guangxi Province, China. It evolved from folk songs and dance performances which combined with local folk songs. It is a performing art with Guilin local characteristics. However, due to the changes of the times and the progress of science and technology, social conditions, and values, Caidiao opera is disappearing from the ways of life of the people. Therefore, in order to conserve and improve Caidiao opera's popularity among the new generation, the following policies can be formulated: through education to improve people's cultural consciousness; develop and utilize the tourism resources of Caidiao opera; give full play to the role of grassroots communities and people; adhere to the entertainment noumenon of Caidiao opera; create good scripts and strengthen the support of Caidiao opera musicians; These policies can arouse the awareness of relevant government departments, relevant artists and people about the dissemination and development of Caidiao opera, so as to transmit the culture and art of Caidiao opera.
