Sani folk songs in Kunming China

Abstract

In this dissertation, the researcher have set out three research objectives specifically for the research of Sani folk songs in Kunming China.Object 1: To investigate on the development of folk songs in Kunming, China; objective 2: To analyze the characteristics of selected songs of Sani folk songs in Kunming, China; objective 3: To propose the guidelines for the preservation and promotion of Sani folk songs. In this dissertation,researcher use qualitative and musicology research method to do such research of Sani folk songs. The data collected by use documentary and interview of the five key informants who choose based on the certifications they got;and use interview forms and questionnaires to collected useful data for the research. The results as follow:

The development of Sani folk songs from 1949 to 2023, the melody and rhythm of Sani folk song still keep the mode and traditional elements, and the content of lyric changed a lot, the contemporary content, such as feeling of life and political events was being put into the lyric. The way of perform Sani folk song also developed as use western instruments to perform Sani folk songs,and the stage for performing not only in the outdoor,but also in some government supported stages and theaters.The characteristics of Sani folk song is, the melody mainly included three tunes (Do\Mi\So,tonic sol-fa, the lyric mainly is "five-word" phrase;sing techniques is singing with falsetto and common voice and mixed with up or down glissandi. 3. For the guideline preservation and promotion of Sani folk song: make Sani folk song into the curriculum system, to built more ‘folk song workshop; to protect the traditional life style of Sani, to built the database for Sani folk song makes the traditional music of Sani didn’t disappear.Make more festivals and competitions for the promotion of Sani folk songs.
