Abstract: This study explores the folk songs of the Wa ethnic group in Yunnan, China, analyzing their historical development, musical characteristics, and strategies for preservation and transmission. The research employs a mixed-method approach, including literature review, fieldwork, interviews, and ethnographic analysis, to document the diverse musical forms and cultural significance of Wa folk songs. Findings reveal that Wa folk songs are deeply intertwined with the social, spiritual, and ritual practices of the community, characterized by unique vocal techniques, instrumental accompaniment, and lyrical themes reflecting Wa identity. However, modernization and external cultural influences pose significant challenges to the preservation of these traditions. The study highlights efforts by local governments, cultural institutions, and community initiatives to safeguard Wa folk music through education, digital archiving, and festival promotion. This research provides a framework for understanding the transmission and sustainability of Wa folk songs, emphasizing the need for collaborative preservation strategies that integrate both traditional and modern approaches. The findings contribute to broader discussions on intangible cultural transmission and the role of indigenous music in contemporary society.
