Chinese Guqin in Anhui Province: Current Status, Musical Characteristics, and Contemporary Preservation

Abstract

The Guqin is a traditional Chinese plucked string instrument with over 3,000 years of history. The objectives were to: 1) investigate the current status of the Chinese Guqin in Anhui Province, China. 2) Analyze the musical characteristics of the Chinese Guqin in Anhui Province, China. 3) Create digital media for the contemporary preservation of the Chinese Guqin in Anhui Province, China. Qualitative research methods with interviews, observation forms, and questionnaires are adopted as research tools. Collect data with two informants in the field. The results indicate that:

1. Guqin culture in Anhui Province has declined due to modern conflicts and social changes. However, Chicheng Liu, a key Guqin master, revived the art through his efforts. Government-certified organizations and institutions like the Anhui Guqin Society promote Guqin research and education.

2. The musical characteristics focus on the five key pieces. Each piece reflects distinct narrative and emotional expressions, highlighting the evolution of Guqin music in Anhui. The intricacies of playing techniques that require advanced finger dexterity.

3. The preservation efforts involve using digital media recordings to showcase Guqin performances, establishing the Anhui Guqin Society, promoting Guqin culture through concerts and competitions, and integrating Guqin education into education curricula. Guqin exhibitions and auctions also raise awareness and appreciation for the artifact.
