Xi’ an Drum Music in Shaanxi Province, China

Abstract

Xi’an Drum music, a form of folk instrumental ensemble popular in Shaanxi Province, China. By analyzing and studying the ways to enhance and attract attention to Xi'an drum music. The objectives are as follows：1) To investigate the causes of the unpopularity of Xi'an Drum Music in Shaanxi Province,China. 2) To examine the musical characteristics of Xi'an Drum Music in Shaanxi Province,China. 3) To discover the ways to promote Xi'an Drum Music to the young people in Shaanxi Province,China.

Using the theoretical methods of ethnomusicology, musicology, and sociology, the researcher investigated, analyzed and described the data collected from a literature review and field work.The following research results related to the above research objectiveswere obtained:

1) Result from Objective 1: According to investigate the multifaceted reasons behind this trend, focusing on socio-economic changes, cultural shifts among younger generations, and the challenges in cultural preservation and transmission.

2) Result from Objective 2: Through the analysis Xi'an Drum Music, referring to the performance forms, instruments, and notation system ,can clearly perceive its life cycle from inception, development.

3) Result from Objective 3: By comparing the transmission methods, performance forms and exhibition activities of existing drum and music society, analyzing the advantages between traditional music societies and innovative drum and music bands, various forms are adopted to attract the attention and love of young people.
