The Development and Musical Characteristics of "Ziyanghe Opera" in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, China

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the development, analyze the musical characteristics, and propose guidelines for the preservation and transmission of Ziyanghe Opera in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, China. The data collection and research were conducted through field investigations involving five key informants. The research tools included observation sheets and interview questionnaires.

The research findings are as follows: The research examines the historical development of Ziyanghe Opera across four key periods: its inception and foundation (1620s-17th century), artistic formation and development (1710s-1830s), prosperity and refinement (1840-1910s), and modern preservation and innovation (1820s-2024).

The findings reveal Ziyanghe Opera's unique musical characteristics, including its high-cavity singing style, intricate vocal cadences, colorful repertoires, and meticulous performance techniques, all of which reflect a blend of traditional and modern influences.

In addition, the study proposes comprehensive guidelines to ensure the sustainable preservation and transmission of this cultural heritage. These include school-based initiatives to integrate opera education into formal curricula, community-based programs to foster local cultural identity, government-led policies and financial support, artist-centered training and innovation, and performance-based strategies focusing on audience engagement and evaluation. By addressing these objectives, the research highlights the cultural and artistic significance of Ziyanghe Opera and provides actionable strategies to balance its preservation with contemporary cultural development.
