Dunhuang tiles in Gansu: the creation and application of patterns in modern decoration

Abstract

As part of Dunhuang art, Dunhuang flower bricks not only have a long historical background and cultural value, but also show a wide range of application potential in modern decoration. The research in this paper has four main objectives: (1) To study the historical background, artistic characteristics, traditional and modern crafts of Dunhuang tile. (2)To Analyze the meaning and value of Dunhuang tiles and look for traditional cultural symbols. (3)To creation of Dunhuang tiles patterns conforms to modern artistic aesthetics and needs.(4) To application of Dunhuang tiles patterns in modern decoration innovations.This study adopts a qualitative research method, combining fieldwork and questionnaires, Purposeful sampling techniques were used,to analyze in depth the application of Dunhuang flower bricks in modern art. The interviewees included five experts and architects working in fields related to Dunhuang art, and 24 random Dunhuang indigenous interviewees. In addition, 9 Dunhuang brick artisans and 55 Dunhuang brick learners participated in the questionnaire.Through interviews and questionnaires, the study covered these groups' perceptions of Dunhuang tiles, feedback on their application and suggestions for innovation. The interviewees were not only from scholars in the field of Dunhuang art research, but also included professionals in related fields such as architectural design and interior decoration, which ensured the diversity and representativeness of the research data and provided strong support for the reliability of the study.

The results of the study correspond to four objectives. First, in terms of historical background and artistic characteristics, the cultural symbols of Dunhuang flower bricks have been inherited intact through patterns and techniques, and their unique artistic style still has important research and application value. Second, at the level of cultural symbols and meanings, the interviewees agreed that Dunhuang flower bricks are not only historical heritage, but also have the potential to be contemporary cultural symbols. Third, in terms of innovation, the study found that by incorporating modern design concepts, the patterns and techniques of Dunhuang bricks can be effectively adapted to contemporary aesthetics and market demands, especially in terms of modernizing and improving materials and techniques. Finally, in the application of architecture and interior decoration, Dunhuang flower bricks show a strong market potential, and the innovative application can provide a unique cultural connotation for modern decoration, which is widely recognized by the market.Through this study, the cultural heritage and modern innovation of Dunhuang flower bricks have been strongly supported and verified, and new ideas of protection and application have been proposed, which not only promote the public's understanding of Dunhuang art, but also open up new paths for the modernization of traditional crafts.
