Engko, Lorgow, Lion, and Dragon : Performing Arts in the process of Ethnicityand Social networks of Chinese people in Udonthani Province

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to 1) to study the development of Chinese people in Udonthani province, 2) to analyze Engko, Lorgow, Lion, and Dragon performing arts, ethnic maintenance, and the creation of a social connected community among the Chinese people themselves, and 3) to analyze the performing arts and the creation of social connection among the Chinese people and other ethnic groups in Udonthani province by using qualitative research method and anthropological approach through participant observation and in-depth interviews with emphasis on the case study of Thung Sri Muang festival 2017.

The research results indicated that Engko, Lorgow, Lion, and Dragon performing arts are parts of religious rites of deity worship held at Pu-Ya ancestral shrine of Udonthani province, and the performers are those who perform the rites. The local Chinese people held the religious rites by organizing the yearly opera festival or ngiew, as the opera is called in Thai, with their belief and faith which harmonizes unity of Chinese ethnic groups in order to maintain Chinese ethnic identity and create a social connected community among Chinese people themselves. This yearly Chinese deity festival has been later organized with Thung Sri Muang festival by the Chinese-Thai people and Udonthani townspeople. As a result, the performing arts have been modified to suit Udonthani social contexts and to be more spectacular. Nowadays, it is regarded as one of unique identities of Udonthani province and plays an important role in terms of tourist attraction of Udonthani province. It can be said that Engko, Lorgow, Lion, and Dragon performing arts take part as a medium for the ritual and cultural performances of Chinese ethnics and to contribute to the creation of social connection with other ethnic groups as well.

การวิจัยเรื่อง เอ็งกอ หล่อโก้ว สิงโต มังกร : ศิลปะการแสดงกับการธำรงชาติพันธุ์และเครือข่ายสังคมของคนจีนในจังหวัดอุดรธานี เป็นวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพเน้นการศึกษาและเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลด้วยการทำงานสนามและศึกษาเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยการนำเสนอแบบพรรณวิเคราะห์ เน้นการศึกษางานประจำปีทุ่งศรีเมือง พ.ศ. 2561 มีวัตถุประสงค์การวิจัย 3 ประการคือ 1) ศึกษาพัฒนาการของคนจีนในจังหวัดอุดรธานี 2) ศึกษาวิเคราะห์ศิลปะการแสดง เอ็งกอ หล่อโก้ว สิงโต มังกร กับการธำรงชาติพันธุ์และการสร้างกลุ่มทางสังคมของคนจีนในจังหวัดอุดรธานี และ 3) ศึกษาวิเคราะห์ศิลปะการแสดง เอ็งกอ หล่อโก้ว สิงโต มังกร กับการสร้างเครือข่ายทางสังคมระหว่างกลุ่มคนจีนกับผู้คนและสังคมวัฒนธรรมในจังหวัดอุดรธานี

ผลการวิจัยพบว่าศิลปะการแสดง เอ็งกอ หล่อโก้ว สิงโต มังกร เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการประกอบพิธีกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นในศาลเจ้าปู่-ย่า และทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ประกอบพิธีกรรม คนจีนร่วมกันประกอบพิธีกรรมโดยจัดงานงิ้วขึ้นตามความเชื่อและความศรัทธาของคนจีน และเป็นการรวมคนจีนกลุ่มต่างๆ เข้าด้วยกันเพื่อการธำรงชาติพันธุ์และสร้างเครือข่ายทางสังคมระหว่างคนจีนกับคนจีน ภายหลังได้มีการจัดงานงิ้วของคนจีนร่วมกับงานประจำปีทุ่งศรีเมืองของคนพื้นถิ่นอุดรธานี จึงมีการปรับปรนศิลปะการแสดง เอ็งกอ หล่อโก้ว สิงโต มังกร ให้เข้ากับบริบทสังคมจังหวัดอุดรธานีและมีความยิ่งใหญ่ตระการตาขึ้น กระทั่งได้รับการยกระดับให้เป็นหนึ่งในอัตลักษณ์ของจังหวัดอุดรธานี และเป็นตัวบทสำคัญทางด้านการท่องเที่ยวจังหวัดอุดรธานี ศิลปะการแสดง เอ็งกอ หล่อโก้ว สิงโต มังกร จึงทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ประกอบพิธีกรรมและการแสดงเพื่อเป็นการสร้างเครือข่ายทางสังคมระหว่างคนจีนกับ คนกลุ่มอื่นไปพร้อมกัน
