Patuxay, Vientiane Capital : Signifier and Signify in the process of Lao’s Historical and Socio – Cultural Development

Abstract

Patuxay, Vientiane Capital is considered as a cultural heritage with aesthetic that can also be linked to the history and social culture of Laos. By studying and researching relevant documents, the researcher hasn’t found studies which described the meaning of “Patuxay” through an academic perspective of art, or anything linking it and the cultural dimensions of the Lao people through time in the changing social context of the country - as an academic issue of interest to the researcher for this study. The “Patuxay” monument is a valuable heritage and property for the Lao nation. Over time, history has changed and the meaning or relevance of “Patuxay” has also changed, socially. The researcher introduces the concept of “Semiology” [the study of musical signs] and “Social memory” as framework for understanding and describing social phenomena, and the text in this research and uses qualitative research methodology. The study was based on the collection of data from documents and related research and interviews experts involved. The research will also describe and discuss the results through descriptive analysis.

This study raises the viewpoints of the people in society toward the Triumphal Arch, as a signifier, which links and correlates between people using spaces to encode appearances through alternative social interpretations. Although the Arch is still standing in the same location, the situation in the country has evolved over time, and the meaning of “Patuxay” was also changed. This research understands the people and culture of Laos over time in different national contexts through the “Patuxay” monument. This can be used as a guideline for future research studies on nearby issues.

อนุสาวรีย์ประตูชัย นครหลวงเวียงจันทน์ ถือได้ว่าเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม ทางศิลปะที่มีคุณค่าทางสุ นทรียศาสตร์ ยังสามารถเชื่อมโยงถึงเรื่องราวทางประวัติศาสตร์และสังคมวัฒนธรรมลาว จากการศึกษาเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง ผู้วิจัยยังไม่พบการศึกษาใดที่ได้อธิบายความหมายของอนุสาวรียประตูชัย ผ่านมุมมองทางวิชาการด้านศิลปกรรมที่มีการเชื่อมโยงกับปรากฏการณ์และมิติทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมของคนลาว ซึ่งผ่านช่วงเวลาในบริบททางสังคมที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงของประเทศซึ่งเป็นประเด็นทางวิชาการที่ผู้วิจัยสนใจศึกษาในครั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยจึงได้นำเอาแนวคิดและทฤษฎีที่เกี่ยวข้องเข้ามามองถึง ตัวหมาย และความหมาย ของอนุสาวรีย์ประตูชัย นครหลวงเวียงจันทน์ รวมทั้งความเป็นมาทางประวัติศาสตร์และสังคมวัฒนธรรมลาวเพื่อให้ทราบถึงเรื่องดังกล่าวว่าเป็นอย่างไร

งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งที่จะศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ชาติและสังคมวัฒนธรรมลาว ตั้งแต่สมัยแรกเริ่มในการก่อสร้างอนุสาวรีย์ประตูชัยตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2500 ถึงพ.ศ. 2563 เพื่อนำไปแนวทางในการอนุรักษ์พัฒนา ตลอดทั้งการนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ให้สอดคล้องกับวิถีชีวิตของคนในสังคมปัจจุบัน การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผู้วิจัยได้วิจัยโดยใช้ภาคสนามเป็นหลัก และงานวิจัยทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศเป็นส่วนประกอบ เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยได้แก่ แบบสัมภาษณ์ แบบบันทึกการทำงานภาคสนาม และเครื่องมือบันทึกข้อมูลโสตทัศนสาร แล้วนำข้อมูลที่รวบรวมได้ทั้งหมดมาทำการวิเคราะห์ตรวจสอบกับข้อมูลทางสัญญะวิทยาและความรู้ทางมานุษยวิทยา แล้วนำเสนอผลการวิจัยด้วยการพรรณนาวิเคราะห์ประกอบภาพถ่าย

การศึกษาวิจัยในครั้งนี้เป็นการยกระดับมุมมองของผู้คนในสังคมที่มีต่ออนุสาวรีย์ ตัวหมายซึ่งมีความเชื่อมโยงสัมพันธ์ระหว่างคนกับความสำคัญการใช้พื้นที่เพื่อสร้างรหัสหมายให้ปรากฏผ่านปฏิบัติการทางสังคมที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลง แม้ว่าประตูชัยจะยังคงตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ณสถานที่เดิมแต่สภาวะการณ์ของประเทศในแต่ละช่วงเวลาส่งผลให้ความหมายของประตูชัยถูกปรับเปลี่ยนไปด้วยเช่นกันการวิจัยครั้งนี้จึงเป็นการทำความเข้าใจผู้คนและสังคมวัฒนธรรมของลาวที่ผ่านช่วงเวลาในบริบต่างๆ ของประเทศผ่านอนุสาวรีย์ประตูชัย ซึ่งสามารถใช้เป็นแนวทางสำหรับการศึกษาวิจัยในประเด็นใกล้เคียงกันต่อไปได้ในอนาคต
