Buddha' s Prediction Literature in Thai Society : Creation and Cultural Interpretation

Abstract

The objectives of this dissertation were to study 1) the patterns and contents of Buddha prediction literatures 2) the creations of Buddha prediction literature in Thai society and 3) the cultural interpretations in Thai society. This dissertation selected the concepts of literature creation and cultural interpretation to analyze the Buddha prediction literatures. This was the utilizing the concepts of literature studies, folklores and sociology into this research work for more accuracy analysis.

The result found that the 73 titles of Buddha prediction literatures in Thai society from each region had 4 groups of contents. Firstly, Buddha prediction literatures came from religious scriptures. Secondly, Buddha prediction literatures were influenced by Panca Antaradhana religious scripture. Thirdly, Buddha prediction literatures had a content of Buddha bibliography. Fourthly, Buddha prediction literatures appeared in local literatures.

The patterns, the contents, and the characteristics of Buddha prediction literatures in Thai society were found that the patterns of Buddha prediction literature written in prose and verse that were differently following each local versification and popularity. The contents of Buddha prediction literatures were divided into 3 groups; Mahasupina, the prediction, and the legends of the place, relics, and footprints. The characteristics of Buddha prediction literatures were found that the outstanding patterns was the styles of writing, and dialects usage. For outstanding contents were 1) forecasting 2) teaching 3) social reflection and 4) religious.

The creation of Buddha prediction literatures in Thai society found that there were 6 styles were 1) the content pattern 2) theme 3) character 4) place/the sacred space and 5) language usage and art created language.

The cultural interpretations found 6 meanings consisting of 1) religious culture; the prediction linked to religious about the old beliefs, Buddhism beliefs, and Hindu beliefs. 2) social and political culture 3) ethnic culture 4) gender culture 5) people class culture; ruling class, bureaucratic elite class, middle class, lover class and priest class 6) natural and environmental culture; nature as a destroyer and the abnormal and 7) popular culture

In summary, the Buddha prediction literatures were the written work involving Buddhism that was widespread and was aware among Thai people. The creation of literatures reflected the importance of literature in a position of religious literature. In addition, the Buddha prediction literatures presented the social phenomena via the cultural interpretation for understanding about Thai society and people.

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีความมุ่งหมายของการวิจัย 3 ประการ คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายในด้านรูปแบบและเนื้อหาของวรรณกรรม 2) เพื่อศึกษาวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายกับการสร้างสรรค์ในสังคมไทย และ 3) เพื่อศึกษาวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายกับการสื่อความหมายทางวัฒนธรรมในสังคมไทย งานวิจัยเรื่องนี้ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้แนวคิดการสร้างสรรค์วรรณกรรม และการสื่อความหมายทางวัฒนธรรม มาวิเคราะห์วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายในสังคมไทย ซึ่งเป็นการประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดทางวรรณกรรมศึกษา แนวคิดทางคติชนวิทยาและมานุษยวิทยา อื่น ๆ เพื่อเป็นแนวคิดเสริมให้การวิเคราะห์มีความละเอียดมากยิ่งขึ้น

ผลการวิจัย พบว่า วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายในสังคมไทยโดยแบ่งตามภูมิภาค จำนวน 73 เรื่อง มีเนื้อหาที่นำมาประกอบสร้างสามารถแบ่งตามการสร้างสรรค์ได้เป็น 4 กลุ่ม กล่าวคือ 1) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายที่มีต้นเค้ามาจากคัมภีร์ทางพุทธศาสนา 2) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากปัญจอันตรธาน 3) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับประวัติพระพุทธเจ้า และ 4) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายที่มีเนื้อหาแทรกอยู่ในวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่น

ด้านรูปแบบ เนื้อหา และลักษณะเด่นของวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายในสังคมไทย พบว่า รูปแบบของวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนาย มีการแต่งด้วยคำประพันธ์ประเภทร้อยแก้ว และร้อยกรองตามลักษณะของฉันทลักษณ์ในแต่ละท้องถิ่น ซึ่งแต่ละภูมิภาคมีอิสระในการใช้รูปแบบที่แตกต่างกัน ตามความนิยมของแต่ละภูมิภาค

ด้านเนื้อหาของวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนาย สามารถแบ่งได้ เป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ 1) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายกลุ่มมหาสุบิน 2) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายกลุ่มคำพยากรณ์ และ 3) วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายกลุ่มตำนานสถานที่ ด้านลักษณะเด่นของวรรณกรรมพุทธทำนาย ผู้วิจัยพบว่า มีลักษณะเด่นด้านรูปแบบ คือ ด้านคำประพันธ์และด้านการใช้ภาษาท้องถิ่น และลักษณะเด่นด้านเนื้อหา คือ ก) เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการทำนายเหตุการณ์ในอนาคต ข) เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการสั่งสอน ค) เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการสะท้อนสภาพสังคม และ ง) เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับศาสนา

ด้านการสร้างสรรค์วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายในสังคมไทย พบว่า มีลักษณะของการสร้างสรรค์ 6 ประเด็น คือ 1) การสร้างสรรค์ด้านรูปแบบของเนื้อหา 2) การสร้างสรรค์วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนายด้านแนวคิด 3) การสร้างสรรค์ด้านตัวละคร 4) การสร้างสรรค์ด้านสถานที่/พื้นที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ 5) การสร้างสรรค์ด้านการใช้ภาษาและวรรณศิลป์

ด้านการสื่อความหมายทางวัฒนธรรม พบการสื่อความหมายทางวัฒนธรรมได้ 6 ประการ คือ 1) วัฒนธรรมทางศาสนา คำทำนายมีความเชื่อมโยงกับศาสนาในด้านความเชื่อดั้งเดิม ความเชื่อทางพระพุทธศาสนา และความเชื่อทางศาสนาพราหมณ์ 2) วัฒนธรรมทางสังคม และการเมือง 3) วัฒนธรรมทางชาติพันธุ์ 4) วัฒนธรรมทางเพศ 5) วัฒนธรรมทางชนชั้น ได้แก่ ชนชั้นปกครอง ชนชั้นขุนนางข้าราชการ และชนชั้นผู้ใต้ปกครอง/ไพร่ราษฎร และพระสงฆ์/นักบวช 6) วัฒนธรรมทางธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ได้แก่ ธรรมชาติเป็นผู้ทำลาย ความวิปริตผิดธรรมชาติ 7) วัฒนธรรมสมัยนิยม

โดยสรุป วรรณกรรมพุทธทำนาย เป็นวรรณกรรมที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับพระพุทธศาสนา ที่มีความแพร่หลายและมีการรับรู้ของคนในสังคมไทย การสร้างสรรค์ของวรรณกรรมทำให้เห็นความสำคัญของวรรณกรรมในฐานะวรรณกรรมพุทธศาสนา อีกทั้งยังนำเสนอให้เห็นถึงปรากฏการณ์ทางสังคมผ่านการสื่อความหมายทางวัฒนธรรมทำให้เข้าใจคนในสังคมไทยเป็นอย่างดี
