Language and Ethnic Identity of Tai Koh Kong in Cambodia

Abstract

This research aims to study the language use, the ethnic identity construction of Tai Koh Kong, and the relationship between the language and the ethnic identity in Koh Kong Province Cambodia. In this study, the researcher used the concept of ethnic identity to collect Ethnographic data in three communities: Tropaing Rung and Koh Kapi in Koh Kong District, and Praek Svay in Kamarakpumin District, Koh Kong Province, Cambodia. To conduct the study, the survey was applied for participant and non-participant observation including the method of conversation with the Tai Koh Kong people by asking their personal history, community history, beliefs, rituals and daily life in the community.

The results showed that the language characteristics of the Tai Koh Kong people are bilingual. They can use both Thai and Khmer, switching languages ​​and choosing the language according to the place, date, time and rituals. In addition, the use of the Thai language of the Tai Koh Kong people has a special feature which is similar to the Thai language of Trat. For the ethnic identity of the Tai Koh Kong people, it is presented and constructed through the history of ethnic groups that have changed their ruling since before the French colonial period until the present under the rule of Cambodia. Therefore, the Tai Koh Kong people in Koh Kong Province have presented and transformed themselves in daily life, cultural tradition, beliefs, rituals, and social memories. The study showed that the relationship between language use and ethnic identity in life such as the terms of ethnic group names, personal name, place’s name, the use of word categories in daily life. Furthermore, there is also the ethnography of communication from various traditions and rituals as well as the images of representatives of the Tai Koh Kong ethnic group in the cultural society.

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะภาษา และอัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์ไทเกาะกง รวมทั้งความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างภาษากับอัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์ไทเกาะกง ประเทศกัมพูชา ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้วิธีการเก็บข้อมูลทางด้านชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาในสามชุมชนจังหวัดเกาะกงได้แก่ ชุมชนเกาะกะปิ ชุมชนแปรกสวาย และชุมชนตรอเปียงรูง เพื่อดำเนินการวิจัยในครั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้วิธีการสังเกตแบบมีส่วนร่วมและแบบไม่มีส่วนร่วม รวมถึงวิธีสนทนากับคนไทเกาะกงโดยสอบถามประวัติส่วนตัว ประวัติชุมชน ความเชื่อ พิธีกรรม และชีวิตประจำวันในชุมชน

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ลักษณะภาษาของคนไทเกาะกงเป็นภาวะสองภาษาซึ่งคนไทเกาะกงสามารถใช้ได้ทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาเขมร คนไทเกาะกงจะใช้การสลับภาษาและเลือกใช้ภาษาตามสถานที่ วันเวลา และพิธีกรรม รวมทั้งการใช้ภาษาไทยของคนไทเกาะกงมีลักษณะพิเศษซึ่งมีความใกล้เคียงกันกับภาษาไทยถิ่นตราด สำหรับเรื่องอัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์ของคนไทเกาะกงได้นำเสนอและประกอบสร้างด้วยผ่านประวัติศาสตร์ของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่ได้เปลี่ยนการปกครองตั้งแต่ก่อนสมัยอาณานิคมฝรั่งเศสจนมาถึงปัจจุบันที่อยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของรัฐกัมพูชา ดังนั้น คนไทเกาะกงที่ยังปักหลักที่อยู่ในจังหวัดเกาะกงได้นำเสนอและปรับเปลี่ยนตัวตนในการดำรงชีวิตประจำวันทั้งมิติประเพณีและวัฒนธรรม ความเชื่อและพิธีกรรม รวมทั้งเรื่องเล่าและความทรงจำ จากการศึกษาลักษณะภาษากับอัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์ไทเกาะกง จะทำให้มองเห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการใช้ภาษากับอัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์ในการดำรงชีวิตทั้งเรื่องชื่อเรียกกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ การตั้งชื่อและนามสกุล ชื่อเรียกสถานที่ และการใช้หมวดคำในชีวิตประจำวัน รวมทั้งเรื่องชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาแห่งการสื่อสารจากงานประเพณีและพิธีกรรมต่างๆ อีกทั้งภาพตัวแทนกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ไทเกาะกงในสังคมวัฒนธรรม
