Factors Associated with the Quality of Life among Adolescents in Skipped-Generation Families

Abstract

his research aimed to study the quality of life of adolescents living in skipped-generation families and factors associated with their quality of life. A descriptive correlational research design was employed. The participants comprised 406 middle school students in grades 1-3 who were residing in the skipped generation families in a particular province locate in Northeastern of Thailand. The research instruments included the social support questionnaire, parenting style questionnaire, family relationship questionnaire, and quality of life assessment tool. The reliability coefficients of these instruments were .81, .71, .73, and .87, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results The overall quality of life of the adolescents was at a moderate level The quality of life of the adolescents in skipped generation families was significantly correlated with social support, parenting style, and family relationship at .01 level (r = .549, .318, and .338, respectively). Based on the research findings, it is suggested that psychiatric nurses, healthcare professionals, families, communities, and relevant agencies should prioritize and support activities that promote positive family relationships, parenting styles, and promote a social support. This will ultimately contribute to improving the quality of life of adolescents living in skipped generation families.
