Motifs and Tale Type in Loychine's horror narrative

Abstract

This thesis aims to study the motifs and tale types in the horror narratives of Loychine, based on 93 short horror narratives.

The study found that the motifs in Loychine’s horror narratives can be categorized into three main groups: 1) Motifs related to spirits, including motifs of spirits, encounters with spirits, hauntings, possession, and coping with spirits; 2) Motifs related to witchcraft, including motifs of individuals cursed by black magic, users of witchcraft, people involved with witchcraft, cursed objects, being cursed, and breaking curses; and 3) Supernatural motifs, including motifs of individuals with a sixth sense, monks, deities, mythical animals, sacred objects, amulets, and communication with supernatural beings.

The tale types in Loychine’s horror narratives can be classified into 13 categories: 1) Tales of karmic relationships; 2) Tales of the law of karma; 3) Tales of the afterlife; 4) Tales of spine-chilling experiences 5) Tales of ghosts in the house; 6) Tales of conversations with spirits; 7) Tales of helping spirits; 8) Tales of dealing with spirits; 9) Tales of countering black magic; 10) Tales of harmful effects from occult practices; 11) Tales of receiving the five aggregates; 12) Tales of people with the sixth sense; and 13) Miscellaneous tales.

The motifs and tale types that appear in Loychine horror stories contribute to creating horror and coherence in each narrative. They give each story a background and distinctiveness, making the tales both intriguing and frightening. Moreover, they reflect certain beliefs, ideas, and perspectives of Thai society through these horror stories, which serve as a form of modern horror media. At the same time, they continue to preserve traditional beliefs that have long existed in Thai society, passing them on to contemporary readers.

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาอนุภาคและแบบเรื่องในเรื่องเล่าสยองขวัญของลอยชาย.จากเรื่องเล่าสยองขวัญขนาดสั้นทั้งหมดของลอยชาย. เป็นจำนวน 93 เรื่อง

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า อนุภาคในเรื่องเล่าสยองขวัญของลอยชาย.สามารถจำแนกออกได้เป็น 3 กลุ่มใหญ่ ๆ คือ 1) อนุภาคเกี่ยวกับวิญญาณ ได้แก่ อนุภาควิญญาณ อนุภาคการพบเจอวิญญาณ อนุภาคการถูกหลอกหลอน อนุภาคการถูกแฝงร่าง อนุภาคการรับมือกับวิญญาณ 2) อนุภาคเกี่ยวกับไสยศาสตร์ ได้แก่ อนุภาคผู้ถูกคุณไสย อนุภาคผู้ใช้ไสยศาสตร์ อนุภาคผู้เกี่ยวข้องกับไสยศาสตร์ อนุภาควัตถุอาถรรพ์ อนุภาคการถูกคุณไสย อนุภาคการแก้คุณไสย และ 3) อนุภาคเหนือธรรมชาติ ได้แก่ อนุภาคผู้มีสัมผัสที่หก อนุภาคนักบวช อนุภาคเทพ อนุภาคสัตว์วิเศษ อนุภาควัตถุมงคล อนุภาคเครื่องรางของขลัง อนุภาคการติดต่อกับสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติ

ส่วนแบบเรื่องของเรื่องเล่าสยองขวัญของลอยชาย.สามารถจำแนกโดยจำแนกออกได้เป็น 13 แบบเรื่อง ได้แก่ 1) แบบเรื่องกรรมสัมพันธ์ 2) แบบเรื่องกฎแห่งกรรม 3) แบบเรื่องหลังความตาย 4) แบบเรื่องประสบการณ์ขนหัวลุก 5) แบบเรื่องผีในบ้าน 6) แบบเรื่องสนทนากับวิญญาณ 7) แบบเรื่องช่วยเหลือวิญญาณ 8) แบบเรื่องรับมือกับวิญญาณ 9) แบบเรื่องแก้คุณไสย 10) แบบเรื่องผลร้ายจากไสยศาสตร์ 11) แบบเรื่องรับขันธ์ 12) แบบเรื่องผู้มีสัมผัสที่หก และ 13) แบบเรื่องเบ็ดเตล็ด

อนุภาคและแบบเรื่องต่าง ๆ ที่ปรากฏในเรื่องเล่าสยองขวัญของลอยชาย.มีส่วนในการสร้างความสยองขวัญและความสมเหตุสมผลในแต่ละเรื่องราว ทำให้เรื่องราวนั้น ๆ มีที่มาที่ไป มีความแปลกแตกต่างไปในแต่ละเรื่องเล่า สร้างความน่าสนใจควบคู่ไปกับความสยองขวัญ อีกทั้งยังสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความเชื่อ แนวคิดและแง่มุมบางอย่างของสังคมไทยผ่านเรื่องเล่าสยองขวัญเหล่านั้นซึ่งเป็นสื่อสยองขวัญสมัยใหม่แต่ยังคงสืบทอดความเชื่อดั้งเดิมอันคงอยู่ในสังคมไทยมาตั้งแต่อดีตให้ถูกส่งต่อไปถึงผู้อ่านที่เป็นคนในยุคปัจจุบัน
