Abstract

This thesis, entitled The Form of Faith, is a creative research project in the field of visual arts, inspired by Buddhist faith as reflected in the Dvaravati-period votive tablets (Phra Phim Phra Phaeng). The objectives of the study are: (1) to examine the content, form, and aesthetic qualities of ancient terracotta votive tablets, and (2) to create visual artworks that convey symbolic representations of faith. The conceptual scope of this creative work involves presenting imagery that embodies the artist’s faith in Buddhism, transformed into visual aesthetic experiences. In terms of form, the works are two-dimensional bas-reliefs, employing dot as the primary visual element to create rhythm and form. Regarding technique, the works are made using clay stamping and traditional earthenware firing, then mounted on wooden frames based on a predetermined composition. The methodology consists of collecting contextual data from the surrounding environment, academic literature, and relevant works of visual art. The data were analyzed to clarify the thematic direction, symbolic forms, and technical processes before proceeding to the creation of four distinctive pieces of original artwork.

The study finds that Dvaravati terracotta votive tablets represent Buddhist art that reflects deep-rooted religious devotion, collective spiritual sentiment, and inherent Buddhist philosophical values, alongside aesthetic qualities that serve as creative inspiration. The resulting works express the artist’s personal interpretation, creating contemporary visual art that bridges Buddhist philosophy with individual perspectives.

In conclusion, the study affirms that the created artworks effectively reflect the aesthetic dimension of faith. The viewer’s engagement with these works can foster a deeper understanding of art’s spiritual essence, thereby facilitating a connection to the core of Buddhist philosophy.

วิทยานิพนธ์การสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทัศนศิลป์เรื่อง รูปแห่งความศรัทธา มีที่มาและแรงบันดาลใจจาก ความศรัทธาในพุทธศาสนาที่สะท้อนผ่านพระพิมพ์พระแผงสมัยทวารวดี จุดมุ่งหมายของการศึกษา 1) เพื่อศึกษาเนื้อหารูปแบบและสุนทรียภาพของพระพิมพ์ดินเผา และ2) เพื่อสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทัศนศิลป์ ที่สื่อถึงรูปสัญลักษณ์แห่งความศรัทธา ขอบเขตของการสร้างสรรค์ด้านแนวความคิด งานสร้างสรรค์ชุดนี้นำเสนอจินตภาพแห่งความศรัทธาที่มีต่อพุทธศาสนาสู่สุนทรียภาพทางทัศศิลป์ ด้านรูปแบบ เป็นผลงาน 2 มิติที่มีลักษณะนูนต่ำ ใช้จุดเป็นทัศนธาตุหลักในการจัดวางให้เกิดเป็นช่วงจังหวะและรูปทรง ด้านเทคนิคกลวิธี ใช้วิธีการกดพิมพ์ด้วยดิน และการเผาดินแบบพื้นบ้าน นำมาจัดวางบนเฟรมไม้ตามรูปแบบที่กำหนด มีวิธีดำเนินการสร้างสรรค์โดยการรวบรวมข้อมูลจากสภาพแวดล้อม ข้อมูลจากเอกสาร และข้อมูลงานสร้างสรรค์ทัศนศิลป์ที่เกี่ยวข้อง วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเพื่อหาความชัดเจนของแนวเรื่อง รูปทรงสัญลักษณ์ และเทคนิคกลวิธี ดำเนินการสร้างสรรค์ เป็นผลงานที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะตน จำนวน 4 ชิ้น

ผลการศึกษาและสร้างสรรค์ พบว่า พระพิมพ์ดินเผาทวารวดีเป็นพุทธศิลป์ที่สะท้อนความศรัทธา การหลอมรวมจิตใจของผู้คน แฝงไว้ด้วยพุทธปรัชญาและคุณค่าสุนทรียะทางศิลปะ ซึ่งเป็นบ่อเกิดแรงบันดาลใจสู่การสร้างสรรค์ และผลการสร้างสรรค์ได้สะท้อนจินตภาพของผู้สร้างสรรค์อันเกิดจากการตีความ และสร้างสรรค์เป็นผลงานทัศศิลป์ร่วมสมัยที่เชื่อมโยงพุทธปรัชญากับทรรศนะส่วนตัว

โดยสรุป คุณค่าที่เกิดขึ้นจากการศึกษา ผลงานสามารถสะท้อนสุนทรียภาพของความศรัทธา การที่ผู้ชมเข้าถึงสาระของความเป็นศิลปะ จะน้อมนำเข้าสู่แก่นแท้ของพุทธปรัชญาได้
