Myths and Folktales of Tai Diaspora in Isan : Ethnic Identity and Cultural Negotiation

Abstract

Myths and folktales are the stories that can convey some meanings except for fun by telling through the culture and preserve the past memories including also show their identities especially the ten groups of Tai Diasporas who have lived in Isan region since the past i.e. Ke-Don, Nyaw, Tai-Beng, Tai Loei, Tai Dam, Phutai, Phuen, Yoy, Laos and Sak. The researcher is interested in studying of ethnic identifying and cross cultural negotiation of the Tai Diasporas in Isan by using myths and folktales as the tools. This thesis purposes 1) to study the categories of myths and folktales of the Tai Diasporas in Isan. 2) to study the ethnic identity of the Tai Diasporas in Isan from the myths and folktales. 3) to study the use of myths and folktales of the Tai Diasporas in Isan for cultural negotiation under the context of Isan society. The methodology is mainly to collect data from documented records and field data additionally.

The result shows that it can compile 32 myths and 373 folktales. The Myths can be classified into 4 categories ; the myth that describe nature or natural phenomena, the myth that describes the history of important people and cities , the myth that describes the propagation of Buddhism and the myth that describes the traditions and ceremonies. For the folktales, they can be classified into 9 categories that are religious folktale, didactic tale, fairy Tale, novella, legend, explanatory tale, animal tale, ghost tales and merry tale or tall tale.

The myths and folktales have communicated the identity of the Tai Diasporas ethnic groups in Isan in case of belief identity, ritual identity, livelihood identity, dwellings identity and collective memory identity. Moreover, the myths and folktales of the Tai Diasporas in Isan play a role in ethnic identifying, ethnic history, the explanation of ritual tradition as well as the formation of social rules and guidelines.

The cultural identity negotiation under the current social context in Isan is found that the myth and folktales of the Tai Diasporas in Isan are used to negotiate geographical areas and the use for cultural reproduction. By the use of myths and folktales of the Tai Diasporas in Isan for cultural reproduction are remarkable, make others ethnic groups be well-know and be more socially acceptable. Including, cultural reproduction has become an economic stimulus for people in the community. Particularly, the use of myths and folktales is the cost of production and tourism.

The myths and folktales of the ethnic Tai Diasporas in Isan are narratives that are consistent with the nature, way of life, beliefs and history of each ethnic group. They are another important way of expressing ethnic identity and also an important tool in cultural negotiation which is reproduced and modified the way in accordance with current Isan social context.

ตำนานและนิทานเป็นเรื่องเล่าที่ใช้สื่อความหมายบางประการได้นอกจากเพื่อความสนุกสนาน โดยสามารถบอกเล่าวัฒนธรรม เก็บรักษาความทรงจำในอดีต ตลอดจนใช้แสดงอัตลักษณ์ของตนได้ โดยเฉพาะคนไทพลัดถิ่นซึ่งได้อพยพเข้ามาอาศัยอยู่ในภูมิภาคอีสานตั้งแต่อดีต จำนวน 10 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ กะเลิง ญ้อ ไทเบิ้ง ไทเลย ไทดำ ผู้ไท พวน โย้ย ลาว และแสก ผู้วิจัยจึงมีความสนใจศึกษาอัตลักษณ์และการต่อรองทางวัฒนธรรมของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานที่ใช้ตำนานและนิทานเป็นเครื่องมือ วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ดังนี้ 1) เพื่อศึกษาประเภทตำนานและนิทานของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสาน 2) เพื่อศึกษาอัตลักษณ์ทางชาติพันธุ์ของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานจากตำนานและนิทาน 3) เพื่อศึกษาการใช้ตำนานและนิทานของคนไทพลัดถิ่นเพื่อการต่อรองทางวัฒนธรรมภายใต้บริบทของสังคมอีสาน โดยใช้วิธีการเก็บรวมรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารที่มีการบันทึกไว้เป็นหลักและใช้การเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากภาคสนามเพิ่มเติม

ผลการวิจัยพบว่าสามารถรวบรวม ตำนาน 32 จำนวน เรื่อง และนิทาน 373 เรื่อง โดยตำนานแบ่งได้เป็น 4 ประเภท คือ ตำนานที่อธิบายธรรมชาติหรือปรากฏการณ์ทางธรรมชาติ ตำนานที่อธิบายความเป็นมาของผู้นำบุคคลสำคัญและเมือง ตำนานที่อธิบายการเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนา ตำนานที่อธิบายประเพณีพิธีกรรม สำหรับนิทาน สามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 9 ประเภท คือ นิทานศาสนา นิทานคติ นิทานมหัศจรรย์ นิทานชีวิต นิทานประจำถิ่น นิทานอธิบายเหตุ นิทานสัตว์ นิทานเรื่องผี นิทานมุกตลกและเรื่องโม้

ตำนานและนิทานได้สื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ไทพลัดถิ่นใน คือ อัตลักษณ์ด้านความเชื่อ อัตลักษณ์ด้านประเพณีพิธีกรรม อัตลักษณ์ด้าน อัตลักษณ์ด้านการทำมาหากิน อัตลักษณ์ด้านที่อยู่อาศัย และอัตลักษณ์ด้านการสร้างความทรงจำร่วม โดยตำนานและนิทานของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานมีบทบาทในการบอกเล่าตัวตนและประวัติศาสตร์ชาติพันธุ์ การอธิบายประเพณีพิธีกรรม และการสร้างกฎเกณฑ์และแนวปฏิบัติในสังคม

การต่อรองอัตลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมภายใต้บริบทสังคมอีสานในปัจจุบันพบว่า มีการใช้ตำนานและนิทานของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานเพื่อต่อรองพื้นที่ทางภูมิศาสตร์ และการใช้ตำนานและนิทานของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานเพื่อผลิตซ้ำทางวัฒนธรรม โดยการใช้ตำนานและนิทานของคนไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานเพื่อการผลิตซ้ำทางวัฒนธรรมนนั้นโดดเด่นและทำให้กลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ต่างๆ เป็นที่รู้จัก และได้รับการยอมรับจากสังคมมากยิ่งขึ้น ตลอดจนการผลิตซ้ำทางวัฒนธรรมได้กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่กระตุ้นเศรษฐกิจของคนในชุมชนได้เป็นอย่างดี โดยเฉพาะการใช้ตำนานและนิทานมาเป็นต้นทุนในการผลิตเป็นสินค้า และเพื่อการท่องเที่ยว

ตำนานและนิทานของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ไทพลัดถิ่นในอีสานเป็นเรื่องเล่าที่มีเนื้อหาสอดคล้องกับธรรมชาติ วิถีชีวิต ความเชื่อ ตลอดจนประวัติศาสตร์ของแต่ละกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ ตำนานและนิทานจึงเป็นอีกวิธีการหนึ่งที่สำคัญในการแสดงอัตลักษณ์ของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ และยังเป็นเครื่องมือที่สำคัญในการต่อรองทางวัฒนธรรมซึ่งถูกนำมาผลิตซ้ำ ปรับเปลี่ยนวิธีการให้สอดคล้องกับบริบทสังคมอีสานปัจจุบัน
