Motifs and Strategies of Presentation in Thai Yaoi Fantasy Novels

Abstract

This thesis entitled “Motifs and Strategies of Presentation in Thai Yaoi Fantasy Novels” aimed to examine folkloric motifs found in Thai yaoi fantasy novels and the narrative strategies used to present them. Using folkloristics as the analytical framework, the study focused on four key types of motifs: character motifs, object motifs, event or behavioral motifs, and setting motifs. It also analyzed linguistic strategies and methods of incorporating various types of folklore into the narrative structure of Thai yaoi fantasy novels.

Data were collected from 20 Thai yaoi fantasy novels published between 2018 and 2021, employing a qualitative descriptive analysis. The findings revealed a wide range of folkloric elements, such as mythological beings including humans, nāgas, garudas, giants, crocodiles, weretigers, and kinnaree as well as magical objects, weapons, ornaments, and talismans. Fantastical events such as interspecies unions and motifs in which characters challenge traditional gender norms through male pregnancy, and same-sex marriage. Settings and narrative components often derive from folktales and legends, blended with supernatural and imaginary realms. The study identified narrative strategies that reflected gender perspectives and negotiations of power within contemporary Thai social discourse. These narrative elements were creatively constructed through linguistic strategies, grounded in folktales, legends, customs, and ritual traditions such as title and character naming, the incorporation of illustrative imagery, and the use of group-specific language.

The study of motifs in Thai yaoi fantasy novels illustrated the inheritance and adaptation of folkloric sources to construct new meanings within contemporary cultural contexts, particularly in relation to gender diversity, love, and character identity. This highlights the dynamic nature of folklore in modern literature, demonstrating its capacity to evolve with changing times and readers’ interests.

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง “อนุภาคและกลวิธีการนำเสนอในนวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซีของไทย” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาอนุภาคที่ปรากฏในนวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซีของไทยและเพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการนำเสนออนุภาคในนวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซีของไทย วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ใช้แนวคิดทางคติชนวิทยามาใช้เป็นกรอบในการวิเคราะห์ โดยเน้นการศึกษาอนุภาค ได้แก่ อนุภาคตัวละคร อนุภาควัตถุสิ่งของ อนุภาคเหตุการณ์หรือพฤติกรรม และอนุภาคฉากและสถานที่ รวมถึงศึกษากลวิธีการนำเสนออนุภาคที่ใช้ข้อมูลคติชนประเภทต่าง ๆ ทั้งในด้านวิเคราะห์กลวิธีทางภาษาและการนำข้อมูลคติชนไปใช้ในการนำเสนอผ่านตัวบทในนวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซี

ผู้วิจัยเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากนวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซีจำนวน 20 เรื่อง ที่ได้รับการตีพิมพ์ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2561–2564 โดยใช้วิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพในลักษณะพรรณนาวิเคราะห์ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า นวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซีมีการนำอนุภาคที่มีที่มาจากคติชน เช่น ตัวละครมนุษย์ นาค ครุฑ ยักษ์ จระเข้ สมิง กินนร และสิ่งของวิเศษต่าง ๆ อาวุธยุทโธปกรณ์ เครื่องประดับและเครื่องรางของขลัง อีกทั้งยังพบการนำเสนอเหตุการณ์แฟนตาซี ได้แก่ การสมพาสข้ามเผ่าพันธุ์ และอนุภาคที่ตัวละครแสดงถึงความท้าทายต่อขนบสังคมเรื่องเพศ ทั้งในแง่การตั้งครรภ์ของเพศชาย และการแต่งงานของชายรักชาย นอกจากนี้ยังพบการใช้ฉาก สถานที่ และองค์ประกอบจากนิทานพื้นบ้านและตำนานมาผสมผสานกับการดำเนินเรื่องในโลกเหนือจริง อีกทั้งยังปรากฏกลวิธีการนำเสนอที่สะท้อนมุมมองทางเพศภาวะและการต่อรองอำนาจของวาทกรรมในสังคมไทยร่วมสมัย โดยอาศัยข้อมูลจากนิทานพื้นบ้าน ตำนาน ขนบธรรมเนียม และพิธีกรรมเป็นพื้นฐานในการสร้างสรรค์องค์ประกอบทางวรรณกรรมผ่านกลวิธีทางภาษา ได้แก่ การตั้งชื่อเรื่อง การตั้งชื่อตัวละคร การใช้รูปภาพประกอบและการใช้ภาษาเฉพาะกลุ่ม

การศึกษาอนุภาคในนวนิยายวายแนวแฟนตาซีแสดงให้เห็นถึงการสืบทอดและดัดแปลงข้อมูลทางคติชนเพื่อสร้างความหมายใหม่ผ่านบริบทของวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย โดยเฉพาะในประเด็นที่เกี่ยวกับความหลากหลายทางเพศ ความรัก และอัตลักษณ์ของตัวละคร ซึ่งชี้ให้เห็นถึงพลวัตของคติชนในวรรณกรรมร่วมสมัยที่สามารถปรับเปลี่ยนตามยุคสมัยและความสนใจของผู้อ่านได้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ
