Ethnic Identity and Creative Folklore in Modern Folk Songs of Zhuang, Nanning City, Guangxi Autonomous Region, China

Abstract

This thesis has two main objectives: (1) to study the presentation of ethnic identity as reflected in modern folk songs of the Zhuang ethnic group in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China, and (2) to examine the characteristics of creative folklore as manifested in these modern folk songs. The research focuses on how the Zhuang identity is represented and how new forms of folklore are creatively constructed through modern folk music. Data was collected between 2022 and 2024, primarily in the Nanning area. The study is framed by the concepts of ethnic identity and creative folklore as key analytical tools.

The findings reveal that modern Zhuang folk songs can be classified into four types: (1) traditional songs, (2) traditional melodies with new lyrics, (3) new melodies with traditional lyrics, and (4) both new melodies and lyrics while still conveying traditional cultural themes. The ethnic identity expressed through these songs includes the Zhuang language, traditional melodies and musical instruments, cuisine, beliefs, customs, rituals, and traditional tools and utensils used in daily life.

In terms of creative folklore, modern folk songs have contributed to the development of four new cultural elements: (1) the “Third Day of the Third Lunar Month” festival, (2) folk song gathering venues, (3) folk song-related tourist attractions, and (4) folk song-themed products. The underlying concept of creative folklore in these cases involves adapting traditional cultural heritage to contemporary social contexts.

The results of this study highlight the dynamic role of modern folk songs as a medium for expressing ethnic identity and fostering the creation of new folklore. This has helped sustain and revitalize the tradition of folk singing among the Zhuang people in Nanning, allowing it to remain vibrant and relevant in contemporary Chinese society.

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 2 ประการ คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาการนำเสนออัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์ที่สะท้อนจากเพลงพื้นบ้านสมัยใหม่ของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์จ้วง เมืองหนานหนิง เขตปกครองตนเองชนชาติจ้วงกวางสี ประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน และ 2) เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะคติชนสร้างสรรค์ที่ปรากฏในเพลงพื้นบ้านสมัยใหม่ของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์จ้วง เมืองหนานหนิง เขตปกครองตนเองชนชาติจ้วงกวางสี ประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน โดยมุ่งเน้นศึกษาการนำเสนออัตลักษณ์ทางชาติพันธุ์ของชาวจ้วงและการสร้างสรรค์คติชนใหม่ผ่านเพลงพื้นบ้านสมัยใหม่ จากข้อมูลถูกรวบรวมระหว่างปี ค.ศ. 2022–2024 โดยเน้นพื้นที่เมืองหนานหนิงเป็นหลัก ภายใต้กรอบแนวคิดเรื่องอัตลักษณ์ทางชาติพันธุ์และคติชนสร้างสรรค์เป็นแนวคิดหลักในการวิเคราะห์

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า เพลงพื้นบ้านจ้วงสมัยใหม่สามารถจำแนกออกเป็น 4 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) แบบดั้งเดิม 2) ทำนองดั้งเดิมแต่เนื้อเพลงใหม่ 3) ทำนองใหม่แต่เนื้อเพลงดั้งเดิม และ 4) ทำนองและเนื้อเพลงใหม่แต่ยังคงสะท้อนภาพประเพณีดั้งเดิม อัตลักษณ์ทางชาติพันธุ์ที่สะท้อนผ่านเพลงพื้นบ้านสมัยใหม่ ได้แก่ ภาษา ทำนองและเครื่องดนตรีพื้นบ้าน อาหาร ความเชื่อ ประเพณีและพิธีกรรม ตลอดจนเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน

ในด้านคติชนสร้างสรรค์ พบว่าเพลงพื้นบ้านสมัยใหม่มีบทบาทในการส่งเสริมและพัฒนาองค์ประกอบใหม่ 4 ประการ ได้แก่ 1) เทศกาลวันที่สามเดือนสาม 2) สถานที่นัดร้องเพลงพื้นบ้าน 3) สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวเกี่ยวกับเพลงพื้นบ้าน และ 4) ผลิตภัณฑ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเพลงพื้นบ้าน โดยแนวคิดในการสร้างสรรค์คติชนดังกล่าว มุ่งเน้นการประยุกต์ใช้มรดกทางวัฒนธรรมเดิมให้สอดคล้องกับบริบทสังคมร่วมสมัย

ข้อค้นพบของวิทยานิพนธ์นี้ชี้ให้เห็นถึงพลวัตของเพลงพื้นบ้านสมัยใหม่ในฐานะเครื่องมือแสดงอัตลักษณ์ชาติพันธุ์และการสร้างคติชนใหม่ ซึ่งส่งผลให้ประเพณีการร้องเพลงพื้นบ้านของชาวจ้วงในเมืองหนานหนิงยังคงธำรงอยู่อย่างเข้มแข็งในกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์จ้วง จนกลายเป็นคติชนในสังคมจีนร่วมสมัย
