| Abstract: | The concept of a Smart University has emerged from the framework of Smart Cities, applying its principles and components to higher education institutions in order to enhance management capabilities across teaching, research, academic services, and campus sustainability. The primary goals are to improve service quality, reduce operational complexity and costs, and establish responsive management systems. However, the transformation into a Smart University requires a clear theoretical framework and a causal model that can guide strategic development and strengthen the competitiveness of higher education institutions at both national and international levels.
This study aimed to: (1) investigate the causal factors influencing the success of Smart Universities in Thailand, (2) develop a causal model that explains the mechanisms driving Smart University development, and (3) test the causal relationships among technology, organization, and environment, and their influence on the domains of economy, society, environment, and governance leading to Smart University success.
The research sample consisted of executives from 126 higher education institutions in Thailand, including public universities, autonomous universities, Rajabhat Universities, Rajamangala Universities of Technology, and private universities. A stratified sampling method was employed. The research instrument was a questionnaire validated for content validity (IOC ≥ 0.5) and demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = .992). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).
The findings revealed that the proposed causal model demonstrated an acceptable fit with the empirical data (Chi-square p ≥ 0.05, CFI and TLI > 0.90, SRMR < 0.08), although RMSEA was slightly above the strict cutoff (0.059). The causal path analysis indicated that technology, organization, and environment significantly influenced the economy, society, environment, and governance domains, which in turn affected Smart University success. Among these, the economic domain showed the strongest direct impact on Smart University development.
This research contributes a validated causal model that reflects the key factors and mechanisms for advancing Thai universities toward becoming Smart Universities. The model serves as a strategic guideline for policymakers and university administrators in planning and implementing effective development strategies that align with Thailand’s educational context. Moreover, the findings provide a theoretical foundation for future studies to deepen understanding and promote the sustainability of higher education in the digital era.
