Representation and Construction of Nature in Thai Fantasy Novels

Abstract

This thesis aims to study and analyze about representation and construction of reality of nature in Thai fantasy novels. These 22 novels are written by four people such as: Jintawee wiwat, Tri Apirum, Pongsakorn and Moke-mung mueang. Four main concepts which is used in this thesis are: Ecocriticism, ecofeminism, representation, construction of reality. The result are: 1) There are two separate parts in image part which represents to nature are bad part and good part. For bad part is presented by non-human (animal, monster, god and plant) and setting (space and phenomenon of nature and phenomenon). Good part is also presented by non-human (animal, monster, god and plant) and setting (space and phenomenon of nature and phenomenon) too and show us about the beauty of nature. For the part of construction reality of nature it has five issues such as: language, curse word, creative nature, natural space, and ecotopia.

To sum up, the representation and construction of reality of nature in Thai fantasy novels lead to a various system of reality by show us two separate ways are nature is more power than human and human is more power than nature or human can dominate nature. Anyways, the power of human and the power of nature are not completely victorious. Although, nature has power to dictate human life but human can still overcome the nature. However, Thai fantasy novels are demonstrated the ways of human action to nature by using the representation of nature. On the other hand, Humans are ready to overcome nature when humans know that nature is not a beautiful thing and threaten them. If nature is a beautiful thing and it has a lot of benefits to the humans, Humans could love and determinate to protect nature and in order to maintain the definition of goodness of human’s life.

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาภาพแทนธรรมชาติและการประกอบสร้างความจริงเรื่องธรรมชาติที่ปรากฏในนวนิยายแนวจินตนิมิตของไทย ในกลุ่มนวนิยายของนักเขียน 4 คน ได้แก่ จินตวีร์ วิวัธน์, ตรี อภิรุม, พงศกร และ หมอกมุงเมือง รวมทั้งสิ้น 22 เรื่อง โดยใช้แนวคิดหลัก ได้แก่ การวิจารณ์เชิงนิเวศ สตรีนิยมเชิงนิเวศ ภาพแทน และการประกอบสร้างความจริง ผลการศึกษาพบว่า 1) ด้านภาพแทนธรรมชาติมีการนำเสนอ 2 ด้านคือ ด้านร้ายและด้านดี ภาพแทนธรรมชาติด้านร้ายมีการนำเสนอผ่านตัวละครอมนุษย์ (สัตว์ สัตว์ประหลาด เทพารักษ์ และพืช) และฉากและบรรยากาศ (พื้นที่ธรรมชาติและปรากฏการณ์ทางธรรมชาติ) ภาพแทนธรรมชาติด้านดีมีการนำเสนอผ่านตัวละครอมนุษย์ (สัตว์ เทพารักษ์ และพืช) และฉากและบรรยากาศ (พื้นที่ธรรมชาติและปรากฏการณ์ทางธรรมชาติ) 2) ด้านการประกอบสร้างความจริงเรื่องธรรมชาติ พบว่า มี 5 ประเด็น ได้แก่ การประกอบสร้างความจริงเรื่องธรรมชาติผ่านภาษา ผ่านคำสาป ผ่านธรรมชาตินฤมิต ผ่านพื้นที่ธรรมชาติ และผ่านพื้นที่อุดมคติเชิงนิเวศ

โดยสรุปแล้ว นวนิยายแนวจินตนิมิตที่นำมาศึกษาถูกนำไปใช้ในการประกอบสร้างความจริงเรื่องธรรมชาติหลายชุดความจริง ซึ่งมีทั้งการสถาปนาให้ธรรมชาติเหนือกว่ามนุษย์และการนิยามความหมายให้มนุษย์มีอำนาจเหนือกว่าธรรมชาติ การศึกษาครั้งนี้ยังทำให้เห็นว่า อำนาจของมนุษย์และอำนาจของธรรมชาติต่างก็ไม่ได้นำมาซึ่งชัยชนะต่อกันและกันอย่างเบ็ดเสร็จ กล่าวคือ แม้ธรรมชาติจะมีอำนาจในการบงการชีวิตมนุษย์ แต่มนุษย์ก็มักสามารถเอาชนะได้ แต่ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้น ไม่ได้หมายความว่ามนุษย์มีอำนาจเหนือธรรมชาติเสียทีเดียว เนื่องจากมนุษย์อาจต้องจำยอมให้ธรรมชาติเข้ามามีอำนาจเหนือตนก่อน จึงสามารถกำจัดธรรมชาติได้ อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อได้วิเคราะห์แล้วยังพบว่า นวนิยายแนวจินตนิมิตนำไปสู่การชี้ให้เห็นถึงวิธีที่มนุษย์ปฏิบัติต่อธรรมชาติตามภาพแทนธรรมชาติที่ปรากฏ เมื่อเห็นว่าธรรมชาติไม่ใช่สิ่งงดงามและเป็นสิ่งที่คุกคามมนุษย์ มนุษย์พร้อมที่จะเอาชนะธรรมชาติ และหากธรรมชาติเป็นสิ่งงดงาม เอื้อประโยชน์ต่อมนุษย์ มนุษย์จึงหมายมั่นจะพิทักษ์รักษาธรรมชาติ ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อดำรงไว้ซึ่งการนิยามถึงความดีในตัวมนุษย์ได้อย่างน่าสนใจ
