Improving Students’ Information Literacy Skills in Senior Project in Information Science Course at Faculty of Informatics, Mahasarakham University

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to study the information literacy condition of students in the field of Information Science, 2) to develop information literacy skills of students in the field of Information Science based on the Big 6 Skills, and 3) to study using information literacy skills in the development of information science senior project for undergraduate students in the field of Information Science of Mahasarakham University. The representative sample is 57 undergraduate students studying in the 3rd year in the field of Information Science of Mahasarakham University enrolled in the academic year 2017. The research instrument consisted of 1) the questionnaire information literacy of students in the field of Information Science based on the framework of information literacy standards of Association of College and Research Library (ACRL) for 5 standards, 2) Pre-test and Post-test before and after organizing the activities, 3) the activity to develop information literacy skills based on the Big 6 Skills, 4) the questionnaire in using information literacy skills in the development of information science senior project, Faculty of Informatics of Mahasarakham University based on the framework of information literacy standards of Association of College and Research Library (ACRL) for 5 standards. The statistics for data analysis were percentage, average and standard deviation. The results of the study were revealed that 1) the overall level of information literacy of students in Information Science was at a high level. Considering each standard, it was found that the students in the field of Information Science have a high level of information literacy in every standard. According to the standard 5, it indicated that the students are able to correctly understand economics, laws, and social issues about information use, information access based on the ethics and laws with the highest average level at 3.82. According to the standard 3: Location and Access, it was found that the students can assess informational sources, and the students can specify the ways how to search informational sources as they need with the least average level at 3.60. 2) Results of Big 6 Skills activities found that the Activity 1: Task Definition, it indicated that the students can specify what they want to do or what information problems are. Activity 2: Information Seek Strategies, it disclosed that the students can start to search information from accessible sources such as the institutional information sources, internet sources etc.and also they can select the types of information as they need.Activity 3: Location and Access, it revealed that the students can access information sources and they can specify how to search information as they need. Activity 4: Use of Information, it showed that the students can know what kind of information is obtained to answer their information problems and they can extract reliable information. Activity 5: Synthesis, it exposed that the students can synthesize all accessible information together and they can record the source of each information to write a bibliography. Activity 6: Evaluation, it found that the students can solve the information problems matching the set boundary and can bring that information for clear presentation to the other people. Also, the students’ all skills increase higher than the former time because the students can receive the information as they need and answer interesting information problems all steps. The test scores before and after organizing the activities, it found that the students’ average test scores before organizing the activities was 56.20 %. However, after teaching and learning the various activities, the students’ average test scores increased at 86.67 %. 3) The overall of using of information literacy skills in the development of information science senior project was at high level. Considering each standard, it found that every standard is at high level. According to the standard 1: The determines the nature and extent of the information needed, it has the highest mean at 3.92 and standard 2: The accesses needed information effectively and efficiently, it has the lowest mean at 3.71.

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมาย 1) เพื่อศึกษาสภาพการรู้สารสนเทศของนิสิต สาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์ 2) เพื่อพัฒนาทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศของนิสิต สาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์ ตามกระบวนการ Big 6 Skills 3) เพื่อศึกษาการใช้ทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศ ในการพัฒนาโครงงานสารสนเทศศาสตร์ของนิสิตระดับปริญญาตรี สาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์ คณะวิทยาการสารสนเทศ มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม การศึกษาครั้งนี้เป็นการศึกษาจากประชากร ได้แก่ นิสิตระดับปริญญาตรี สาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์คณะวิทยาการสารสนเทศ มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ชั้นปีที่ 3 โดยมีการลงทะเบียนเรียนในปีการศึกษา 2560 จำนวน 57 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการรวบรวมข้อมูล ได้แก่ 1. แบบสอบถาม สภาพการรู้สารสนเทศของนิสิต สาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์ ประกอบด้วยข้อคำถามตามกรอบแนวคิดมาตรฐานการรู้สารสนเทศ ของสมาคมห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยและวิจัยแห่งสหรัฐอเมริกา (ACRL) จำนวน 5 มาตรฐาน 2. แบบทดสอบก่อนและหลังการจัดกิจกรรม 3. กิจกรรมเพื่อพัฒนาทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศตามกระบวนการ Big 6 Skills 4. แบบสอบถาม การใช้ทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศ ในการพัฒนาโครงงานสารสนเทศศาสตร์ คณะวิทยาการสารสนเทศ มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม ประกอบด้วยข้อคำถามตามกรอบแนวคิดมาตรฐานการรู้สารสนเทศ ของสมาคมห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยและวิจัยแห่งสหรัฐอเมริกา (ACRL) จำนวน 5 มาตรฐาน สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ได้แก่ ค่าร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย และส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน ผลการวิจัย พบว่า 1) ระดับการรู้สารสนเทศโดยรวมของนิสิตสาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์ อยู่ในระดับมาก เมื่อพิจารณาแต่ละมาตรฐาน พบว่า นิสิตสาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์มีการรู้สารสนเทศทุกมาตรฐานอยู่ในระดับมาก โดยมาตรฐานที่ 5 สามารถเข้าใจในเรื่อง เศรษฐกิจ กฎหมาย และประเด็นของสังคมเกี่ยวกับการใช้และการเข้าถึงสารสนเทศ รวมถึงการใช้สารสนเทศอย่างถูกต้องตามหลักจริยธรรมและกฎหมาย มีค่าเฉลี่ยสูงสุดเท่ากับ 3.82 และมาตรฐานที่ 3 สามารถประเมินสารสนเทศและแหล่งที่มาอย่างมีวิจารณญาณ รวมทั้งสามารถเชื่อมโยงสารสนเทศที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกไว้แล้วกับพื้นฐานความรู้เดิมที่ตนเองมีอยู่ได้ มีค่าเฉลี่ยน้อยที่สุดเท่ากับ 3.60 2) ผลการจัดกิจกรรมตามขั้นตอน Big 6 Skills พบว่า กิจกรรมที่ 1 การนิยามภาระงาน (Task Definition) พบว่า นิสิตสามารถระบุได้ว่าสิ่งที่ต้องการทำหรือปัญหาสารสนเทศคืออะไร กิจกรรมที่ 2 การกำหนดยุทธศาสตร์การค้นสารสนเทศ (Information Seek Strategies) พบว่า นิสิตเริ่มต้นการค้นหาสารสนเทศจากแหล่งที่สามารถเข้าถึงได้ เช่น แหล่งสารสนเทศสถาบัน แหล่งสารสนเทศอินเทอร์เน็ต เป็นต้น และนิสิตเลือกประเภทของสารสารสนเทศที่ต้องการได้ กิจกรรมที่ 3 การสืบค้นและเข้าถึงสารสนเทศ (Location and Access) พบว่า นิสิตสามารถเข้าถึงแหล่งสารสนเทศได้ และนิสิตสามารถระบุวิธีการสืบค้นสารสนเทศที่ตนเองต้องการได้ กิจกรรมที่ 4 การใช้สารสนเทศ (Use of Information) พบว่า นิสิตสามารถรู้ว่าสารสนเทศประเภทใดบ้างที่ได้มาเพื่อตอบปัญหาสารสนเทศของเราได้ และนิสิตสามารถสกัดสารสนเทศที่มีความน่าเชื่อถือได้ กิจกรรมที่ 5 การสังเคราะห์ข้อมูล (Synthesis) พบว่า นิสิตสามารถสังเคราะห์ประมวลสารสนเทศที่ได้ทั้งหมดเข้าด้วยกันได้ และนิสิตได้จดบันทึกแหล่งที่มาของสารสนเทศแต่ละชิ้น เพื่อนำมาเขียนบรรณานุกรม กิจกรรมที่ 6 การประเมินผล (Evaluation) พบว่า นิสิตสามารถแก้ปัญหาสารสนเทศได้ตรงกับขอบเขตที่ตั้งไว้และสามารถนำสารสนเทศนั้นมานำเสนอให้บุคคลอื่นเป็นที่เข้าใจได้ และนิสิตมีทักษะเพิ่มขึ้นทุกทักษะที่ได้ทำมาก่อนหน้านี้ เนื่องจาก นิสิตได้สารสนเทศที่ตนเองต้องการและตอบปัญหาสารสนเทศที่ตนเองสนใจได้ทุกขั้นตอน ผลคะแนนทดสอบก่อนการจัดกิจกรรม และหลังการจัดกิจกรรม พบว่า นิสิตมีคะแนนทดสอบก่อนการจัดกิจกรรม เฉลี่ย ร้อยละ 56.20 เมื่อผ่านการสอนและได้เรียนรู้กระบวนการต่าง ๆ ที่ได้ทำกิจกรรม และมีพัฒนาการเพิ่มขึ้น โดยพบว่า นิสิตมีคะแนนทดสอบหลังการจัดกิจกรรม เฉลี่ยร้อยละ 86.67 3) การใช้ทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศในการพัฒนาโครงงานสารสนเทศศาสตร์ของนิสิตสาขาสารสนเทศศาสตร์ โดยรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก เมื่อพิจารณาแต่ละมาตรฐาน พบว่า ทุกมาตรฐานอยู่ในระดับมาก โดยมาตรฐานที่ 1 สามารถกำหนดชนิดและขอบเขตของสารสนเทศที่ตนเองต้องการได้ มีค่าเฉลี่ยสูงสุดเท่ากับ 3.92 และมาตรฐานที่ 2 สามารถเข้าถึงสารสนเทศที่ต้องการอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและประสิทธิผล มีค่าเฉลี่ยน้อยที่สุดเท่ากับ 3.71
