Phadaeng Nang-Ai : Dynamic of Isan Folk Literature and the Role in Community Empowerment

Abstract

Isan folk literature Phadaeng Nang-ai has been told for centuries. The interesting characteristic of the literature is in how the story is told, its conversation, and remade version by local people in the form of explanation or Mo Lam artists in the village. The story has been mingled to relate with the world vision from the perspective of local people and told by means of oral tradition from ancestors to the new generations.

The objectives of this research are 1) to examine the forms and content of Isan folk literature Phadaeng Nang-ai, including its several written and oral versions existing in Isan society and 2) to investigate the dynamic and role of Isan folk literature Phadaeng Nang-ai on empowering Isan contemporary communities. The research methodology was mixed methods research between folklore research and anthropological research. Data were collected from the field survey and documents. The data analysis employed the concept of dynamism, folk literature, functionalism, and community empowerment.

The research discovered two key findings. First, Isan folk literature Phadaeng Nang-ai has been remade and modified into many forms (1). For example, Phadaeng Nang-ai is found in written and oral traditions (1.1) such as Phadaeng Nang-ai in the ancient palm leaf manuscripts, Phadaeng Nang-ai in transliteration in the book, Phadaeng Nang-ai in the Isan dancing performance in Bun Bangfai, and Phadaeng Nang-ai in Mo Lam play. Moreover, the story of Phadaeng Nang-ai is also found in beliefs and religious rites (1.2) such as Phadaeng Nang-ai in sermons, Phadaeng Nang-ai in Sarapanya (a type of Thai verse mostly found in Isan), Phadaeng Nang-ai in Bun Bangfai tradition, Phadaeng Nang-ai in the festival of town guardian spirits, and Phadaeng Nang-ai in cave paintings. Furthermore, Phadaeng Nang-ai is also found in new media (1.3) like in television, music, 3D cartoon or animation, and Phadaeng Nang-ai in theatrical play. Secondly, Phadaeng Nang-ai literature plays a role in empowerment of Isan contemporary communities. The existence of this literature raises ethnical awareness, ethnical identity, ethnical relationship, ethnical strengthening, cross-national and cross-cultural relationship, the struggle and negotiation about natural resources, and tourism promotion.

The study expressly illustrated the dynamic of Isan folk literature Phadaeng Nang-ai and allowed for international thinking system and culturally specific thinking system reflected through folk literature. A new body of knowledge was created through cultural dynamism and decryption of folk literature in order to indicate that the story of Phadaeng Nang-ai has hidden symbols. These symbols are in turn elements of the culture that play an important role in the thinking system of people in the society. Eventually, Isan folk literature Phadaeng Nang-ai has a significant role in community empowerment.

วรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่ ได้รับการบอกเล่าสืบมาหลายยุคหลายสมัย ความน่าสนใจของเรื่องคือสิ่งที่ปรากฏออกมาจากความดั้งเดิมผ่านการพูด การสนทนา การประดิษฐ์ขึ้นมาใหม่ของคนในท้องถิ่น ผ่านคำอธิบายหรือกลอนลำของหมอลำในหมู่บ้านที่เชื่อมโยงกับกับโลกทัศน์แบบพื้นบ้านท้องถิ่นที่ถ่ายทอดผ่านการเล่านิทานปรัมปราจากปากต่อปาก จากรุ่นสู่รุ่น จากรุ่นปู่ย่าตายาย สู่รุ่นพ่อรุ่นแม่ และจากรุ่นพ่อรุ่นแม่ สู่รุ่นลูกหลาน สืบต่อกันมา

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมาย 2 ประการ คือ 1. เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบและเนื้อหาของวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่ระหว่างสำนวนลายลักษณ์ฉบับต่างๆ และสำนวนมุขปาฐะที่ปรากฏอยู่ในสังคมอีสาน 2. เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะพลวัตและบทบาทของวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่ ที่มีต่อการสร้างพลังชุมชนในบริบทของสังคมอีสานร่วมสมัย การวิจัยครั้งนี้ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคติชนวิทยาผสมผสานกับการวิจัยทางมานุษยวิทยา โดยการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากภาคสนามและข้อมูลเอกสาร แล้วนำมาวิเคราะห์ โดยใช้แนวคิดหลักคือ แนวคิดพลวัตทางวัฒนธรรม (Dynamism) แนวคิดวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่น (Folk Literature) แนวคิดบทบาทหน้าที่ของวรรณกรรม (Functionalism) และแนวคิดการสร้างพลังชุมชน (Community Empowerment)

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1. ปัจจุบันได้มีการนำวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่ มาผลิตซ้ำ และสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นใหม่ในหลายลักษณะและหลายรูปแบบ เช่น 1.1. ผาแดงนางไอ่ในวัฒนธรรมลายลักษณ์และมุขปาฐะ ได้แก่ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในใบลาน ผาแดงนางไอ่ฉบับปริวรรตในหนังสือ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในกาพย์เซิ้งบุญบั้งไฟ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในหมอลำ 1.2 ผาแดงนางไอ่ในวัฒนธรรมความเชื่อและศาสนาได้แก่ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในประเพณีการเทศน์ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในประเพณีสวดสรภัญญะ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในพิธีเลี้ยงผีบ้านผีเมือง ผาแดงนางไอ่ในจิตรกรรมฝาผนัง 1.3 ผาแดงนางไอ่ในวัฒนธรรมสื่อสมัยใหม่ ได้แก่ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในโทรทัศน์ ผาแดงนางไอ่ในบทเพลง ผาแดงนางไอ่ในการ์ตูนสามมิติ/การ์ตูนแอนนิเมชั่น ผาแดงนางไอ่ใน การแสดงละครเวที แสง สี เสียง 2. ผาแดงนางไอ่กับบทบาทการสร้างพลังชุมชนในบริบทของสังคมอีสานร่วมสมัย ได้แก่ บทบาทการสร้างสำนึกทางชาติพันธุ์ บทบาทการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ทางชาติพันธุ์ บทบาทการสร้างความสัมพันธ์ทางชาติพันธุ์บทบาทการสร้างความเป็นปึกแผ่นทางสังคมชาติพันธุ์ บทบาทการสร้างความสัมพันธ์ข้ามชาติและวัฒนธรรม บทบาทการต่อสู้และการต่อรองการจัดการทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ บทบาทการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยว

การศึกษาครั้งนี้สามารถทำให้เข้าใจลักษณะการพลวัตของวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่ได้ดียิ่งขึ้น และจะทำให้เกิดการเรียนรู้ระบบคิดอันเป็นสากลและระบบคิดทางวัฒนธรรมเฉพาะถิ่นของมนุษย์ที่สะท้อนผ่านวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่น ทำให้เกิดองค์ความรู้ใหม่ผ่านกรอบแนวคิดพลวัตทางวัฒนธรรม จากการถอดรหัสภาษาวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่น ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่าวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่มีสัญลักษณ์ที่ซ่อนเร้นและสัญลักษณ์นี้จะเป็นองค์ประกอบอย่างหนึ่งของวัฒนธรรมที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในระบบคิดของคนในสังคม และวรรณกรรมท้องถิ่นอีสานเรื่องผาแดงนางไอ่ ยังมีบทบาทในการสร้างพลังชุมชนอีกด้วย
